What is Root Canal Treatment?
Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and overall smile. While traditional dentistry mainly concentrates on addressing oral health issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay, cosmetic dentistry goes beyond functional concerns to enhance the aesthetics of a person’s teeth.
It is a common and highly successful dental procedure performed by our Root Canal Specialist in Pune
The tooth structure consists of the following layers: the outermost hard layer called enamel, the middle layer called dentine, and the innermost layer called pulp which consists of a network of nerves and blood vessels. When tooth decay or a cavity reaches the pulp, or the pulp is damaged due to trauma, generally there is pain due to pulpitis (inflammation of the pulp). Root canal treatment involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning the canals of the tooth root and disinfecting them, and finally filling and restoring the tooth.
Benefits of Root Canal in Pune
Root Canal Treatment (RCT) offers several benefits for patients, which is why it’s a commonly performed dental procedure. Here are the key advantages of undergoing a root canal:
Pain Relief
RCT effectively alleviates severe toothache and discomfort associated with pulp inflammation or infection. Once the damaged pulp is removed, the pain subsides.
Prevents Tooth Loss
By saving the tooth, RCT helps avoid the need for extraction, which can lead to gaps in your smile and potential alignment issues.
Restored Chewing Ability
After RCT and the placement of a crown, the tooth’s strength and function are restored, allowing you to chew and bite comfortably.
Improved Oral Health
Removing infected pulp eliminates the source of infection, preventing it from spreading to other teeth or causing more extensive health problems.
Less Invasive
Compared to tooth extraction and replacement options like dental implants, RCT is less invasive and generally requires less recovery time.
Comfortable Treatment
Dentists use local anesthesia during RCT, ensuring that the procedure is comfortable and virtually painless for patients.

5. Darkening Of The Tooth: Discoloration Or Darkening Of A Tooth Can Indicate Damage Or Death Of The Pulp Inside.

Is A Root Canal Painful?
Most of the root canal procedures at our clinic are not painful during the treatment procedure itself. This is possible due to our expertise in Endodontics, the use of highly efficient equipment for performing the treatment, the latest techniques of local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, and our gentle, caring touch! While it is quite common to have painless root canal treatments at our clinic, there can be exceptions to this norm.
In fact, if you have been experiencing significant pain or discomfort before root canal treatment, (due to a deep cavity/decay/abscess, etc), the root canal provides relief from that pain.
However, after the procedure, it’s common to experience some mild discomfort or soreness for a few days. This discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and typically subsides as the tooth heals.
What are the root canal charges in Pune?
The root canal charges in Pune can vary depending on several factors, including the complexity of the procedure, the extent of infection, the dentist’s experience, etc.
At our clinic, the cost of a single root canal treatment in Pune can range from ₹6000 to ₹8,000 per tooth. This estimate includes multiple appointments which may be required for the RCT to ensure that the tooth heals. It can be paid altogether or in installments of ₹2500 – ₹3000 during the appointments.
In the case of re-RCT of a tooth i.e. re-doing the RCT in a tooth in which the RCT has been done before, the old filling materials have to be removed from the root canals, followed by thorough cleaning. The cost for that generally ranges from ₹8000 to ₹10,000 per tooth.
Dental insurance may also cover a portion of the cost, so it’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider if you have coverage for root canal treatments.
Root Canal Treatment Procedure
Root Canal Treatment is a highly effective procedure for saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted due to infection or severe damage. It allows patients to retain their natural teeth, maintain proper oral function, and eliminate pain or discomfort associated with tooth infections. The procedure is typically performed by experienced dentists and is a routine dental treatment.
The steps involved in a Root Canal Treatment in Pune procedure are as follows:
Diagnosis: We begin by examining the tooth and taking X-rays to assess the extent of damage and determine if a root canal is necessary. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area, ensuring your comfort during the procedure.
Access Opening: The dentist creates We create a small access opening in the crown of the tooth using dental drills to remove the decayed part of the tooth crown and reach the pulp chamber and root canals.
Pulp Removal: Specialized instruments are used to remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue from the pulp chamber and the root canals. The cleaned and shaped root canals are filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, to seal the space and prevent recontamination.
Cleaning and Shaping: Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the interior of the root canals is done with files and disinfectant solutions to remove any remaining bacteria. Shaping of canals is done to aid good cleaning and ensure a proper fit for the filling material. In case there is pus/abscess/infection in the bone around the tooth root, a medicament is placed in the canal after cleaning it and left there for a few days.
Core build-up: Generally, in root canal-treated teeth, even though the infection is gone, much of the tooth structure has been lost to decay. The remaining tooth structure is thus not strong enough to withstand chewing forces and is prone to breakage/fracture. Hence, a strong core build-up material is required to fill in and provide support to the remaining structure. The access opening in the tooth’s crown is filled with this strong core build-up material or a post & core which is like a permanent filling material.
Crown/Final Restoration: A dental crown is generally needed after the root canal treatment, to restore the biting function of the tooth, since a tooth without pulp tissue tissue becomes brittle over time. The crown is custom-made to match the patient’s natural teeth in terms of shape and color. You can choose between the different types of crowns that we offer.
Follow-up: The patient is advised follow-up appointments if required, to monitor the tooth’s healing and ensure there are no complications.

How long does a root canal procedure take?
The duration of a Root Canal Treatment (RCT) can vary depending on factors like the complexity of the dental problem and the severity of the issue. On average, a straight-forward single-sitting root canal treatment typically takes a single appointment of about 60 to 90 minutes to complete. However, specific circumstances may either shorten or extend the procedure time.
But many cases (in which the decay is extensive, infection is long-standing, with the presence of pus/abscess/ periapical radiolucency) are not suitable for a single sitting root canal treatment and require 2 to 4 appointments, which could be 20-40 minutes in duration. The canals are cleaned and certain intracanal medicaments are left in the canal for a few days in between the appointments.
It’s important to follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions carefully to promote proper healing and reduce the risk of complications. If you experience severe or prolonged pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms after an RCT, be sure to contact your dentist promptly.
