Understanding the Treatment

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also called RCT or endodontic treatment, removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and seals them so the natural tooth can be kept. At Bespoke Dental Clinic in Pune, a root canal is done under local anaesthesia and costs ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 per tooth, with the crown charged separately.

The pulp is the soft tissue inside a tooth that holds its nerve and blood vessels. It runs from the crown of the tooth down through narrow channels in each root, called root canals. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected and cannot heal on its own.

During a root canal in Pune, the dentist removes this pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then rebuilt and usually covered with a crown so it can be used for chewing again. Front teeth usually have one canal, while molars can have three or four.

Common Signs

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

A root canal may be advised when the pulp inside a tooth is inflamed or infected. These are some of the signs a dentist will look into:

Toothache that lingers

Pain that lasts, keeps returning or wakes a person at night.

Pain on biting

Discomfort when chewing or pressing on one tooth.

Lasting sensitivity

Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays after the food or drink is gone.

Swollen gum or gum boil

Swelling near one tooth, or a small pimple-like bump that may release pus.

A darkened tooth

A tooth that has turned grey or darker, often after an injury.

Deep decay or a cracked tooth

A cavity or crack that has reached close to the nerve, often seen on an X-ray.

An infected tooth does not always hurt, and sometimes the problem is found on a routine X-ray. Only a dental examination can confirm whether a root canal is needed.

Our Treatment

Single Visit Root Canal (One Visit RCT) at Bespoke

A single visit root canal, also called one visit RCT or a single sitting root canal, cleans, shapes and seals the canals in one appointment of about 60 to 90 minutes. It is suitable for selected cases, such as a tooth with an inflamed pulp or a recently broken tooth with no swelling, pus or long-standing infection.

When there is infection in the bone around the root, the root canal is usually completed over 2 to 4 visits, with medicine placed in the canals between visits, as this is the safer approach. The dentist at Bespoke Dental Clinic decides which suits the tooth after the examination and X-ray.

Key highlights
  • One appointment of about 60 to 90 minutes for suitable teeth
  • Done under local anaesthesia
  • Digital X-ray, electronic apex locator and rotary files
  • Multi-visit treatment when infection needs time to settle
  • Suitability confirmed after examination and X-ray
The Process

Root Canal Treatment: Step by Step

  1. Examination and X-ray

The dentist checks the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to see the roots, the canals and any infection in the bone around them.

  2. Local anaesthesia

The tooth and the gum around it are numbed, so the patient feels pressure and movement rather than sharp pain.

  3. Access and pulp removal

A small opening is made in the tooth to remove the decay, reach the pulp chamber and take out the infected pulp.

  4. Cleaning and shaping

Rotary files clean and shape each canal, an apex locator measures its length and disinfecting solutions wash out bacteria. If there is infection, medicine is placed in the canals until the next visit.

  5. Sealing the canals

Once the canals are clean and dry, they are filled and sealed with gutta-percha and a sealer to stop bacteria from getting back in.

  6. Core build-up and crown

The tooth is rebuilt from inside, and a crown is usually placed to protect it from cracking and restore chewing.

Visits

How Many Visits Does a Root Canal Take?

Most root canals at Bespoke Dental Clinic take between one and four visits, depending on the tooth and how much infection is present.

Root canal visits and time per visit
SituationVisits for the root canalTime per visit
No swelling or pus, straightforward canals (single visit RCT)1 visit60 to 90 minutes
Infection, pus or a long-standing abscess2 to 4 visits, a few days apart20 to 40 minutes
Re-root canal treatmentUsually 2 or more visitsVaries with the tooth

After the root canal is complete, one or two more visits are usually needed to prepare and fit the crown.

Advantages

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Treats the source of pain

Removing the inflamed or infected pulp usually relieves the toothache it was causing.

Keeps the natural tooth

The tooth and its root stay in the jawbone instead of being removed.

Stops infection spreading

Cleaning and sealing the canals removes the bacteria that cause an abscess.

Restores chewing

With a core build-up and crown, the tooth can be used for normal biting again.

Keeps teeth in position

Neighbouring teeth are less likely to drift than when a gap is left.

No replacement tooth needed

Saving the tooth avoids the need for a bridge, implant or denture in that space.

Eligibility

Who Needs a Root Canal?

A root canal may be advised for

  • A toothache that lingers or wakes a person at night
  • An infected pulp or abscess seen on an X-ray
  • Deep decay that has reached the pulp
  • A cracked or broken tooth that exposes the pulp
  • An injured tooth that has darkened
  • An older root canal that has become infected again (re-RCT)

Another option may be advised when

  • Decay has not reached the pulp, so a tooth-coloured filling is enough
  • The tooth is too broken down to rebuild
  • The root has a vertical crack
  • Gum disease has left very little bone around the tooth
  • A child’s milk tooth needs a pulpotomy or pulpectomy instead (paediatric dentistry)

Where a tooth cannot be saved, the dentist explains replacement options such as a bridge or a dental implant.

After the Root Canal

Crown After Root Canal Treatment

A tooth that has had a root canal no longer has a living pulp and has often lost a large part of its structure to decay, so it can become brittle and crack under chewing forces. A crown, also called a cap, covers the whole visible tooth and protects it.

A crown is usually advised for back teeth, which take most of the chewing load, and for any tooth that has lost a lot of structure. It is usually prepared once the root canal is complete and the tooth is comfortable, often within a few weeks. Until then, hard foods should be avoided on that side.

Metal-ceramic (PFM)

A metal base covered with tooth-coloured porcelain, commonly used for back teeth.

Zirconia

A tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal, strong enough for back teeth.

All-ceramic

A tooth-coloured crown with a natural, slightly translucent look, often chosen for front teeth.

The dentist suggests a crown type based on the tooth’s position and the bite, and explains the fee after the examination. More about crowns is on the dental crowns page.

Post-Treatment Care

Aftercare Tips After a Root Canal

Mild soreness when biting is common for a few days after a root canal and usually settles with the pain relief the dentist advises.

  1. Wait for the numbness to wear off

Eat only after 2 to 3 hours, to avoid biting the cheek or tongue.

  2. Avoid hard foods on that side

Until the crown is fitted, avoid chikki, chakli and hard nuts. Roti, rice, dal and vegetables are fine.

  3. Take medicines as prescribed

Follow the dentist’s instructions for any pain relief or antibiotics.

  4. Keep the area clean

Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth, including around the treated tooth.

  5. Get the crown on time

Attend every planned visit so the tooth is protected before it can crack.

  6. Call if something feels wrong

Contact the clinic for increasing pain after 2 to 3 days, swelling, a high bite or a lost temporary filling.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

What are the root canal charges in Pune?

At Bespoke Dental Clinic in Pune, root canal charges are ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 per tooth, covering all the root canal visits. Re-root canal treatment costs ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 per tooth, and the crown is charged separately. The exact root canal price depends on the tooth, the number of canals and the amount of infection, and is explained before treatment starts.

Does a root canal hurt?

Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so most patients feel pressure and vibration rather than sharp pain during the procedure. If the tooth is very painful or swollen beforehand, the dentist may first bring the infection under control so the numbing works well. Mild soreness when biting is common for a few days afterwards.

Is single visit root canal treatment possible?

Yes. A single visit root canal, or one visit RCT, is possible for selected cases, usually a tooth with no swelling, pus or long-standing infection, and takes about 60 to 90 minutes. When there is infection in the bone around the root, treatment over more than one visit is usually safer. The dentist decides after the examination and X-ray.

How many visits does a root canal take?

A root canal usually takes one to four visits. A tooth with no swelling or pus may be completed in one visit of 60 to 90 minutes. A tooth with infection or an abscess usually needs 2 to 4 visits of 20 to 40 minutes, with medicine placed in the canals between visits. The crown needs one or two further visits.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

A root canal-treated tooth that is protected with a crown and kept clean commonly lasts 10 to 20 years or longer. How long it lasts depends on how much natural tooth remains, whether the crown is placed on time, biting forces, teeth grinding and oral hygiene. Regular check-ups help the dentist spot new decay or wear early.

Is a crown necessary after a root canal?

A crown is usually advised after a root canal on a back tooth, because these teeth take most of the chewing load and become more brittle once the pulp is removed. A front tooth with most of its structure intact may sometimes be restored with a filling alone. The dentist decides after seeing how much healthy tooth remains.

What can a person eat after root canal treatment?

Once the numbness wears off, soft everyday food such as roti, rice, dal, vegetables, bread and pasta can be eaten. Between visits and until the crown is placed, very hard or sticky foods like chikki, chakli and hard nuts should be avoided on the treated side. After the crown is fitted, most people return to their usual diet.

How long does pain last after a root canal?

Mild soreness or tenderness on biting usually settles within a few days. It can last a little longer when the tooth was badly infected before treatment. Pain that is severe, keeps increasing after two or three days, or comes with swelling should be checked by the dentist.

Root canal or extraction: which should a patient choose?

Where a tooth can be restored, keeping it with a root canal is usually preferred, as it keeps the natural root, the bite and the bone around the tooth. Removing a tooth leaves a gap that usually needs a bridge, implant or denture. Extraction may be advised when a tooth is too broken or cracked to save. The dentist explains both options.

What is re-root canal treatment (re-RCT)?

Re-root canal treatment redoes an older root canal that has become infected again or has not healed. The dentist removes the old crown or filling and the old canal filling, re-cleans and disinfects the canals and seals them again. At Bespoke Dental Clinic, re-RCT costs ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 per tooth, with the crown charged separately.
